"Hi, I'm Ricky."
Ericka is fully aware that her nickname is generally a guys name, but that's the beauty of it; she likes it that way. It makes her different from other people. Most girls her age, fresh into high school, are trying to get the boys to notice them as something delicate and fragile - or they're just trying to get attention any way they can. Ricky's different. She doesn't look for attention from the guys, she just sort of gets it. It's not because she's drop dead gorgeous, stick thin, wearing revealing clothes. It's because she doesn't really give a damn about what anyone really thinks of her. While she does like to look nice sometimes, her favourite days are when she decides she wants to wear sweatpants and a tanktop. Some days she looks the part of a typical teenage girl, but more often than not she lives in jeans, sports jerseys, and sweats. She goes for comfort, but can make these simple outfits look cute.
Ericka got the nickname Ricky when she was about four years old. When most girls were playing with dolls, Ricky was playing the backyard sports with the boys of the neighborhood. As she grew up she just seemed to bond more with guys than with girls. She credits this to her mother rarely being around, and her dad taking care of her more; Ricky wouldn't have it any other way. Up until the age of ten she was an "army brat", moving from country to country, though she was originally from New Zealand. Her father was a soldier and he died in war when Ericka was ten. Ricky always wears his dog tags.
The now two person family moved back to New Zealand though Ericka's mother was unable to take care of her due to a rapid fall into alcoholism. Deemed an unfit mother, Ericka was put into an orphanage. A few weeks later she got news that her mother commited suicide. It was a hard hit, but Ericka, being only ten at the time, didn't really know how to respond. Unable to fully comprehend what happened, she was gloomy for a week or so after the funeral, but then came back full swing. Ricky always had this strength of mind, a certain determination to just keep moving forward. While some people may think that's horrible - Ericka just moving on, she doesn't see it as a bad thing. She's not the time to let herself be depressed forever. Every now and then she lets herself have a good cry, then afterwards she tells herself, 'Okay, it's time to move on. You've had a good cry and now you know what that feels like.'
As Ericka went through the next few years of her life, this proved to be a very good way to cope with many things. Accademically, Ericka wasn't doing so well. Her dominant classes were history and math simply because with history, there weren't any loopholes - it was all fact. With math, all of the concepts intertwined and there was only one answer. When everything in her life was going wrong, it was good to know that there was something for certain; though that didn't mean she plunged into her books. Nah, Ricky had always calmed herself by doing physical activity. Being around boys for most of her life, she felt comfortable in the orphanage being around the guys and roughing it up with them. When Ericka was twelve she was put in a foster home for about eight months, but the family 'returned' her because she 'wasn't trying to be flexible'. Really, Ricky was, but she was glad she was away from that home. It was full of bratty girls who spent more time in the mirror than anything. Ericka wasn't really this type of girl; she would look at herself once in the morning, fix herself up, then head out for the day. She didn't see the purpose in staring at herself.
So it was back to the orphanage. The orphanage was a good one too. While the kids there were mostly male, it was a nice place to be. The owners had money and took care of the children well, giving them the best they could within reason. It wasn't like a house with a mother and a father though. No, Ericka had never really found that, but she had friends to go 'home' too, and she always looked forward to that. While it was difficult to participate in clubs and such for the majority of her life due to constantly moving, she did love sports. During the summer she would swim, and recently got certified as a 'junior lifeguard'. In the fall she would play volleyball, in the winter hockey (which was her favourite), and during the spring that they lived in America she picked up lacrosse. Ricky is a natural when it comes to sports, and she loves some friendly competition. She's a nice girl who hangs with the guys, but is always the best friend, never the girlfriend. For now she alright with that because though she may be in high shcool, she is trying to focus on doing well at Kostine (which she isn't sure why she was invited to in the first place) and lately there have been a few families interested in adopting or fostering her. Ricky likes to make a good impression. She keeps her word and does her best at everything.
