Many moons ago, before anycat can truly remember, a stranger came to them. He spoke of being from something called clans. The local cats listened to his stories and within a few moons had formed their own clans. They realized there was no better defence against the vicious predators that lived in their homeland. It was a rocky start, but within time CoralClan, DustClan, RockClan and ForestClan began to prosper and thrive.
There were battles, and arguments over territory. Apprentices were trained, and warriors were made. And every Moon, as the that pale circle hung in the sky they gathered atop Seer's point to meet in peace, according to the laws of StarClan.
Living in the land they did, they tended to view some of the native creatures of their homeland as much more than just animal. They were gods, each one took on significance for a clan. The might crocodile, within time became the symbol for RockClan. With their shared ability to swim and general enjoyment of water CoralClan revered the Platypus. Hardy and resolute, the wild brumby was all but worshipped by DustClan. And though it size of a prey creature, the clever bower bird was not hunted ForestClan.
As the moons went by, they lived as clans and worshipped both their ancestors and their animal gods. Then, about seven moons ago, sickness came to the Clans. It swept though the territories, taking lives without discrimination. Apprentices, nursing queens, elders, even warriors and leaders were not safe from the epidemic. By the time the plague stopped, the clans had been decimated. CoralClan had lost two leaders and left the young Dingostar in charge. ForestClan had lost both its medicine cat and her apprentice. DustClan's strongest and oldest warriors were dead. RockClan had fared the worst, and only a handful of cats had survived. Together the clans were a shadow of what they once were. Now they had a choice, work together, even break the code, and regrow their numbers. Or keep the code letter for letter, and all but die off.
