"Here you go, your key."
"Thank you, ma'am!" said Belle with a smile, hoping it countered the frown of pain she wanted to give from holding her suitcases so long. It surprised her that she only had two: it had taken a miracle to get all of her things into them.
'All right...' she thought as she turned to waddle to the elevator, 'Room three fifty three would be on the sec-'
"Oh, miss!" cut in the front desk lady's voice, sweet and way too high pitched to not be forced, "the elevator's broken. I'm afraid you'll have to take the stairs."
Belle paused. Breathed. She refused to get anxious about this. Today was to be an exciting day, the day she finally got away from crazy dorm life and started hanging around more mature people.
Hopefully.
The room mate who'd offered for her to move in was the only room mate she'd ever gotten along with. All of the people she had roomed with would probably say she was a bossy prude who didn't know how to have fun. This one realized that she didn't appreciate seeing strange men in her kitchen when she woke up.
The stairs were thin and winding... an odd feature for an apartment building in her opinion. Not that she was complaining... she hadn't climbed them yet.
With a sigh, she started waddling up the stairs, feeling the burn in her wrists and shoulders.
'Thank goodness I threw out all the stuff I didn't need...' she thought, wincing as a wheel caught a stair. When she got to the door, she carefully lifted her leg, hooked her foot in the door handle and pulled it down to push the door itself open. She moved herself in the way so it wouldn't close back on her, and shuffled into the hallway, giving herself a mental pat on the back.
'All right... three fifty three, two fifty... ah, there are are" she said, seeing the large black numbers on a plaque over her left shoulder. She set down her bags to get the key, and unlocked the door, shuffling inside. It was a small, simple apartment, but tidy and nice. Not one she'd expect to see rats running around in, and she was plenty thankful for that. There was a kitchen and a couch and a tv... and that was all she needed.
Problem was... it seemed no one else was around.
"...um... hello? Is someone here?" she called out, walking to the small hallway. Figuring the room that was hers was probably the empty one, she went ahead and tried the one at the end of the hall. It was a single door... and strangely ominous. Like something about it sitting there in the darkest part of the house meant something. Naturally, she started walking towards it. There was a dent in the wood, she noticed.
'Wouldn't be so bad if I peeked in here...'
She put her hand on the knob, biting her lip. It was cold. Where she was standing happened to be very cold.
'It would just be an honest mistake if it wasn't mine' she assured herself, pushing it open barely a crack...
