back to school, probably the only three words in the english language that chess hated to hear. but at the same time they were his three favorite words to hear. mainly because he got to see all of his friends again. ah, his friends. chess probably had the greatest group of friends in the world. he couldn't wait to catch up with them all and he honestly wished that he could meet up with all of them at once, but he wanted to make sure he had actual time to sit down and talk with each one of them before they all started running around j cricket and causing trouble. the first person on his listen was probably the person he was most excited to see. rolling around on his bed in his dorm room texting angel he smiled at the thought of seeing her. so instead of waiting any longer he told her to meet him in the school garden. he figured he could have some fun and tease her a bit out there because there were so many places that he could hide behind.
grabbing his cell phone and a bag of sour gummy worms he folded up the bottom of his pants like a hipster and was on his way. doubling back to his room though he figured he would leave a note for grant in case he went looking for chess. he was roommates with the kid and the two had become pretty close friends so he figured the two of them would hang out later. making his way outside into the sunny weather he smiled. he kind of missed j cricket, but at the same time he didn't because he missed his baby sister even more. once he was at the garden he looked around to see if angel was there yet. spotting a small brown haired girl he snuck behind some bushes just in case it was her. the closer he got the closer he realized that it indeed was her. how she had managed to beat him to the garden he would never know. maybe he would sit and ponder it later. hiding behind a bush he smiled. time for him to have some fun. "i spy with my little eye a pretty girl with brown hair and beautiful brown eyes." rustling some of the bushes he quickly moved to before she could catch him. "hmm i wonder who that pretty girl might be." moving he again he quietly snuck up behind her covering her eyes with his hands. he loved bothering her and she was such a good sport about things which made things all the more fun. She'd been running when she got that text. Step, step, vibrate. Breathe. Vibrate? She stopped, and bent down, pulling her phone out of her sock with coverse clad foot. Meet him in the garden? That was where she was running. Angel turned and headed back in the direction she'd come, eventually sitting herself on one of the benches, waiting.
Chester Abrams. The two had history. They'd gone to school together. He was her elementary school crush. They chased each other, teased each other, and were adorably...well, adorable. He knew more about her than anyone at J. Cricket. Not only did that make him the closest person she really had to a true, honest to god friend, but it made him dangerously powerful. She found Chess funny. Annoying, obnoxious, a little bit cute, and sometimes she just had to smack him, but funny. His riddles and crazy mind games drove her nuts, and he knew it. Even his teasings drove her crazy. But she still found it funny, and would fire right back with her own tauntings and teasings.
She heard a russle, and turned, brown eyes scanning the area. Damnit. Now she knew why he picked this place to meet. He was a jerk. "Damnit, Chess." She muttered, dusting a fluff ball off her stretchy black capris. A purple tank top clung to her torso, and her hair, which was down, fell onto her tan shoulders in waves. "i spy with my little eye a pretty girl with brown hair and beautiful brown eyes." She whipped around, trying to spot Chess. She'd heard him. Angel was now blushing, but she swore she heard him. Jerk was doing it again.
Another rustle of bushes, and she turned, trying to target the next bush. No such luck. He was too fast for her sometimes. "hmm i wonder who that pretty girl might be." The brunette turned again and gave up, sighing as she waited. Chess would eventually come out and actually begin teasing her. Suddenly, she felt hands on her eyes. "Chess! You jerk." She moved her hands around, hoping to find him and smack him. "I know it's you. Get your hands offf. I'm gonna fall. And you might get smacked more times than you need to." Angel's hands grasped her friend's wrists. "Chess!" She said again, laughing now.

if there was one person that he loved messing with more than angel, chess had obviously not met them yet. chess and angel went at it like cats and dogs. he had known her since they were both little and he had always thought that she was a pretty girl. not that he had ever said anything to her. he liked having angel as a friend and didn't want things to be awkward for telling her that he thought she was one of the most amazing girls that he had ever met. dodging her hits but never moving his hands from her eyes chess laughed. "silly girl you should know better than to hit me." removing his hands from her eyes he picked her up like a baby cradling her in his arms and spinning her around. "oh but you love me far too much to hit me. or maybe you love me so much that you can't help but hit me. i'm not quite sure which." setting her back down on her own two feet chess smiled and ducked because he knew better than anyone that angel was about to hit him. not that it mattered much to him. he took her hits like a man and then laughed about it later.
after he was pretty sure that she was done hitting him. he straightened himself out a bit before sitting down in the grass. benches were over rated in his mind. "so, since you're done hitting me now care to share some sour gummy worms and catch up? i haven't seen you all summer. or maybe the summer hasn't seen you at all." he always spoke in odd little phrases. he wasn't sure why but he had been like that since he had come out of rehab. truth be told the boy had gone slightly mad in that place. patting the ground next to him he looked up at angel and smiled. opening the pack of sour gummy worms he took one out of the pack and enjoyed the sweet yet slightly sour flavor. "so how was your summer angel? how empty was your life without me? haha." Chess and Angel were polar opposites. But that probably was what made them have that spark that Angel loved. They were cats and dogs. Heat and cold. So opposite, but so fun to watch together. Not to mention that Chess was cute. But she didn't say a word. Those feelings were off-limits for her, and admitting to them was like giving in more than she should've. Besides, they were friends, and Chess probably had his pick of girls. She knew Faye Tinker liked to flirt with him. Evangeline was no Faye. No Faye at all.
No hit. No hit. Miss. Shit. His hands didn't move from her eyes until they did only to pick her up. "Chess Abrams, put me down now." He spun her around and she laughed, still tring to ask Chess to put her down between her laughter. "I love you so much I can't help but hit you. That's it, Chess." She joked, as he finally set her down. He ducked as she finally hit him, right on the arm, hard. There. That was done. Now, she wrapped her arms around him, hugging him before letting go quickly. She'd had to hug him once.
Then, he sat down and she followed suit, stretching her tanned legs, her conversed feet shuffling in the grass. "I'd love to share some sour gummy worms and catch up. I haven't seen you all summer. I think summer saw me just fine, Chess." She used one hand to prop herself up, the other running her fingers through her tangled locks of brown hair.
Reaching over, the hand that had finally gone through her hair reached into the bag and puleld out a worm, which she ate, enjoying the sugary, sour taste. "so how was your summer angel? how empty was your life without me? haha." She laughed. "Summer was shitty, I tried to run away again, got caught after two days...and my life was a black hole without you, Chess." The brunette rolled her eyes. "How was yours? And how's your adorable sister?" Angel asked, eyeing her friend with curiousity.

chess couldn't help but feel like a kid around angel. probably because he had known angel since they themselves were kids back in vegas. it was a nice surprise when he had bumped into angel the year she started j cricket. up until the moment that he had been reunited with her again chess hadn't realized how much he had missed her. there was just something about her that he really liked, not that he had ever said anything to her. the two were so different but at the same time just clicked really well together. he didn't want anything to come between them because honestly, she was an amazing girl and an even more amazing friend.
laughing with her as she tried to get him to put her down he smiled. messing with her was just too much fun for him to pass up. besides he hadn't seen her all summer, there was a lot of time to make up for. "ha i knew it. either way you still love me." smiling at her he flipped his hair out of his eyes. feeling her hand collide with his arm he laughed. finally she had managed to get that out of her system, though knowing her as well as he did she would be hitting him again several more times before their time together was done. "ouch, did you spend all summer working out or something cause i actually felt that one angel." normally her hits were pretty much nothing to him but for some reason or another that hit actually stung a bit. probably because he wasn't prepared for it though. watching as she sat down next to him he really couldn't help but stare. angel was beautiful, she always had been. shaking his head he really hoped that she hadn't caught him staring at her. she'd probably hit chess first and ask questions later cause that's just the way she was sometimes. crossing his legs indian style he offered the bag to angel so she could help herself.
hearing that angel had tried running away again made chess frown just a bit. he knew that she was more than capable of taking care of herself out there but he didn't like the fact that she was always trying to run away. it always made him worry about her because if anything were to happen to her he would be crushed. "angel you know i don't like when you run away. and i know that you're gonna tell me that you're more than able to take care of yourself but really, something might happen to you one of these days." pulling a gummy worm out of the bag he tilted his head to the side and frowned a little bit. "you know that when things get too hard to handle i'm just a text or a phone call away." that was one thing that he always made sure of. chess' phone was always on and was always on hand in case of emergencies. when she asked about his sister that just made chess frown even more. he hadn't been able to go home all summer, his parents made it very clear that they hadn't wanted him to come back. so instead he spent his summer living out of his suitcase and playing on the sidewalks for change and roaming the country until school started up again. he didn't want angel to know that though so of course chess did what he did best, he lied. "oh emily's doing amazing. she's getting really big now." that was pretty much the best that he could do. in reality he hadn't seen his sister since his parents sent him off to rehab. "other than that though my summer pretty much was a total failure. i did pretty much nothing except play music." which was at least partially true. Chess always made Angel remember childhood. While her foster homes would suck, school was great and Angel liked going outside to play and seeing Chess. Even if she'd just slept behind some bush the night before, hoping that they wouldn't find her. She'd pull the twigs from her hair and chase him, laughing the whole time. Chess made her feel normal, even here. When they'd met at J. Cricket, Angel hardly recognized him. She'd heard he went to rehab, and she worried. There were times when the brunette wanted to visit, but was afraid Chess didn't want to see her, or would think she was just there to pity him. And every Valentines Day in elementary school, her older friends would help her sneak a Valentine into his bag. She never signed them. That would've resulted in relentless teasing for the next year. That, and well...Chess was her friend. She didn't want to wreck a good thing.
His smile. He was enjoying this, and Angel smiled back, enjoying it too. As much as he annoyed her, it was all too fun. And the summer had kept them apart for three months of sheer emptiness. "I'm desperately in love with you, Chess. You've caught me." She rolled her eyes, hands itching to brush his hair from his eyes, though he did it by himself. "Ouch," The brown eyed girl grinned and nodded. "All that running gave me some strength. And besides, what else did I do when I was running? I was working on my muscle. Gotta get tough for you, Chess." The girl rolled her eyes again. She caught him staring for a second, and chose not to act on it, wondering why, first of all, he was doing that, and second of all, internally freaking out that he was staring at her.
His frown made her raise a brown. Angel knew that Chess hated the fact that she ran away, but he knew she was strong enough to take care of herself. He was a worry-wort sometimes. "Chess, I did it. Deed done. I know you don't like it, but I am more than able to care for myself. And if something happens, it happens. But I can't stay there, Chess. They all hate me. They look at me like a dog that has fleas." Angel felt her eyes begin to water, and she wiped them, reaching out to grab another candy. "I know. You're always the first person I'll call, Chess. You know that." Angel's phone was simply there for that purpose. For Chess, mostly. Maybe a few others, but mostly for his benefit. She didn't mention the three other run away attempts made, but they would probably come up at some point in their conversation. She didn't want to worry him anymore. She was here now, safe and sound, and that was all that mattered. Angel smiled when he mentioned his sister. She remembered how much he loved her. "Aw. How cute. And that sounds...boringish. But you'd rather be playing music than most anything else. So that's kinda good." She nodded, biting half of the worm she'd taken from the bag.

chess couldn't help but smile when angel said that she was madly in love with him. he of course knew that she was kidding but it made him smile either way. i knew it. it's the bad ass cat eye contacts right? the ladies love the cat eye contacts." nodding his head with a very serious look on his face that didn't really last too long chess ended up bursting into laughter. "damn does this mean i gotta start working out again? i can't have you being stronger than me. people are gonna think that i'm a wimp and i can't have that. ladies aren't gonna wanna go out with a guy who's a wimp." really chess didn't have girls all over him. well he did and he was a pretty big flirt but he only had eyes for angel. the only person that knew that besides himself though was faye and by association peter because the two were pretty much attached at the hip. "please don't hit me for acting like a total jerk. you know i'm just messing around with you angel." last thing that he wanted was for angel to hit him again. he didn't like it when angel hit him but he was pretty used to it so it didn't bother him much. besides the hitting was sorta their thing.
he worried about her, a lot, more than he probably should and he knew this. angel was more than able to take care of herself, he knew this as well. but he really couldn't help but worry about her. really chess had never cared for any girl as much as he cared for angel and he really didn't want anything to happen to her. it would probably kill him if anything happened to her. "i know that. you've told me about a million times. but that doesn't mean that i'm gonna stop worrying about you angel." brushing a few loose strands out of her face he noticed that her eyes were starting to water just a little bit. there was no way that chess could even begin to understand what angel had went through her whole life but he could try if she would tell him. reaching for her chess pulled her close and just held her. "angel you're worth so much more than whatever they're telling you. you know that don't you? at least to me you're worth so much more than that, you always have been." angel was amazing and he honestly didn't even think that she really knew how amazing she was because her whole life she had been treated terribly. there were times that he wished the two of them could just run away together because he knew that he would be able to make her happy and feel better about herself.
letting her go he watched as she took another gummy worm from the bag of candy. he wanted so badly to tell her how much he really cared for her but he was too scared to say anything. or at least he was too scared to say something right now. he had something planned though, he would make his move when the time was right. "i better be the first person you call. hell i should be the first person you call before anything happens to you." pulling out another worm from the bag he bit off half and tossed the other half at a bird that happened to land not too far from where they were sitting. he didn't want angel to worry about him so he didn't really tell her where he had been all summer. instead it seemed that she had bought his white lie and he was able to breathe easy again. "yeah, i can't wait until she's old enough to talk so i can actually understand what she's saying. oh you know me. i can't sit still unless i have a guitar in my hands. also i have a present for you but you're gonna have to wait until i perfect it." he had been working on a cover of a song that he was planning to sing to her. actually the idea mostly came from faye but he was going to take full credit for the idea. "so beautiful, what do you wanna do today besides sit in the garden with me?" Chess had a cute smile. He’d always had a cute smile. He’d smiled a lot when they were young, she remembered. He was quite smiley. ”Bad ass cat eye contacts? Yeah, maybe your other ladies do, but you know I don’t like cats.” She rolled her eyes. Angel had never liked cats, which, ironically, were one of Chess’ favorite animals. The teen never understood her friend’s fascination with the creatures, though she thought she might be biased considering she liked dogs more. His laughter pulled her from her thoughts. She bent her arm like a muscle man and grinned. ”You know it. Oh, we cannot have that. Yeah, Faye doesn’t like wimpy guys, does she?” The brunette raised a brow, thinking of the blonde that Chess hung out with almost as much as he did with her. She wasn’t jealous! Of that blonde girl? No. Well...maybe. Yes, damnit, yes. She was jealous. Faye had tried talking to her earlier that day, and suggested they hang out soon, but Angel wasn’t sure. Maybe she’d tell Chess and he’d help her out. ”Speaking of, the blonde wanted to talk to me today. She suggested we ‘hang out’.” She said, using air quotes. ”I won’t hit you unless you do something really stupid. I know you’re messing around. That’s your favorite thing in the world to do, Chess.” She raised her brows. Though, hitting was kinda their ‘thing’. It was kinda funny, actually.
His worry made her crazy. The simple fact that someone actually cared about her was amazing. She wouldn’t say that, in a weird way, she liked it, just a little bit. Especially because it was Chess in particular that was worrying about her. ”I know. I can’t control your worry. But maybe tone it down a little. I feel like I actually have...” She stopped mid-sentence and bit on her lip, not daring to say the last part. a mom, or dad. Her eyes watered a little more as Chess pulled strands of hair from her face. He saw. She knew he’d seen her. Suddenly, she felt herself being pulled close into Chess, held there by him. Angel shut her eyes, asking the tears to just go away. Far away into her tear ducts. ”Well, at least someone cares about me.” She murmured, opening her eyes, blinking away the last of the tears. As much as he did know, Chess didn’t know the entirety. She didn’t share much of her personal life with anyone, not even Chess, the closest thing she had to a best friend. Eventually, though, she wanted to tell him. He deserved to know, putting up with her as long as he had.
He let her go and she recoiled from him, leaving a bit of distance between the two. Angel rolled her eyes. ”I promise, if I’m in a dark alley, I will call you asap.” She held up her phone to show him, and placed it on the grass in front of her. Her brown eyes followed the half of worm and watched it land. She then thought about Chess’ summer. Somehow, it felt like it wasn’t entirely there. She’d thought he would’ve gone home to Vegas, as she had, but she figured maybe his parents had taken the family somewhere. She decided that seemed valid enough and brushed the idea away. She ate the last of the worm she’d been munching on and watched Chess, hoping he didn’t think she was staring. ”Aw. I still wanna meet her, you know. Someday.” She said, feeling a little pang in her chest for the child she barely knew. ”True. You really can’t. A present for me? Tease.” She stuck her tongue out at him. ”Perfect it? Ugh. How long do I have to wait?” She whined, rolling her eyes to show that she was kinda teasing. Something for her? He didn’t have to do that for her. Whatever ‘that’ was, exactly. Though it seemed to have something to do with his guitar. A song? This would perplex her for a while. Chess’ voice interrupted her thoughts. ”Can’t I do this all day?” She asked with a raised brow, feeling her cheeks heat slightly with the whole ‘beautiful’ business. ”Well, hang out with you. I’m pretty much free. Unless I take Faye up on that offer.” Again Angel raised her brows.

"other ladies? i have other ladies? last time i checked the only lady that i'm here with right now at this very moment is you angel." he said with a laugh. sure chess was a bit of a flirt but just about everyone that he hung out with loved his cat eye contacts. just cause apparently chess looked good with them on. "haven't you heard though angel? cats don't like you either. they told me so last night before the snuck into your room and left cat hair all over the place." chess knew that angel hated cats, and he hated dogs. for some reason though the two got along so well that it was a bit strange to him. "faye? what does faye have to do with anything? you know that me and her are just friends. she's like a sister to me." tilting his head to the side chess looked at angel curiously. chess and faye had never been anything more than just friends. sure they would flirt with each other, but chess flirted with just about everyone cause that was just him. "wait a second. are you jealous angel?" raising an eyebrow at her chess smirked at her. she could try to avoid the question all she wanted but one way or another chess was gonna get an answer out of her no matter what it took. "don't try to deny it. just answer the question truthfully." when angel mentioned that faye had wanted to hang out with her he couldn't help but smile. his play would eventually fall into place whether she liked it or not. "oh you should totally hang out with faye. please? for me? i know you don't really like her all that much but she's one of my best friends and you're one of my best friends. pleaseeeeee?" he normally wasn't the type to beg but he figured that if he annoyed her about it enough she would go. he needed to know how angel felt about him. "i never do anything stupid but you hit me anyway. which isn't fair by the way cause if i do say so myself i'm a pretty awesome guy."
"have what. say it angel, just let it out." he knew that angel had been bounced around from foster home to foster home for pretty much most of her life. chess even knew that she had issues trusting people, but you would think that since they had known each other for so long that she would be able to open up more to him. he really wished that she would though. chess knew that she had been through so much in her life and that there was no way that he would ever begin to really understand they way she felt and why she acted the way that she did, but he wanted to. chess wanted to be there for her and show her that he was one person that she would be able to depend on no matter what. "angel you know i'll always care about you. we go way back to the sandbox days." still holding her he smiled and brushed a few strands of her hair out of her face. of course though he had to ruin the moment and he gave her a noogie before letting her go. he knew he was gonna pay for that but he didn't mind it that much. every time she hit him he figured it was her way of saying that she cared about him at least the little bit. the harder it hurt the more she cared.
watching her roll her eyes at him, he flipped his hair out of his eyes and laughed. "haha, i better be the first person you call. hell i should be the first person you call before you even think about walking into that alley." chess couldn't remember the last time that he had seen his parents or his baby sister. it was probably before he had been sent to rehab. neither of his parents wanted anything more to do with him after everything that had happened so he hadn't been home in a really long time. in some ways chess was pretty much like an orphan now. he refused to tell angel though, simply because she had nothing to worry about. chess was older than her and his problems were really nothing big. he had been doing just fine playing music on the streets all summer. when angel said that she wanted to meet his sister he felt a little pang in his chest. oh, if only she knew how impossible that was. "she'll probably be here with my parents the day that i graduate from j cricket. so you've still got a whole year before you get to meet her." letting himself fall back in the grass he laid back and looked up at the sky. chess couldn't even remember how she looked like. the only picture he had was one that was taken in the hospital the day that emily was born. "i'm not teasing. i'm being totally and completely serious. it's actually a two part present, both of which you'll get in due time." there actually wasn't a part two to his present but he'd figure something out eventually. "you're going to have to wait until forever and a day to pass by. then you have to multiply that by infinity and then divide it by the square root of pi. once you do that then you'll know when you get your present." he smiled his signature wide smile at her. "oh of course we can just hang out here all day. but only if you stop being so far away and come lay down next to me and cloud watch with me." patting the grass next to him he looked over at her. "and you should take faye up on her offer. but not now, for now i'm holding you captive. faye can have you all to herself later. or maybe you can take cassie with you so you'll at least have a friend with you." "There are other girls at J. Cricket that you hang out with besides me, you know." She raised a brow. It was kinda sweet that Chess seemed to primarily focus on her when she was there, and didn't talk about other girls. Unless she was the one to bring them up. "Guess what? There's no cat hair in my room, genius. And I highly doubt an army of cats would come do that." She rolled her eyes at Chess. Faye had to do with a lot of things. "I know that. But I'm just saying." Angel kept an neutral face as he looked at her. Was he realizing what she was feeling? Shit. He was. "I'm not jealous. Why would I be jealous of that stick? She's not worth that energy." Chess' smirk made her raise a brow. He wanted an answer. And she knew he would do anything to get it. "I answered truthfully, and I am not denying anything." The brunette scoffed, as if she was offended by the accusation. "Fine, fine. I'll hang out with her. For you. But you owe me." Angel gave him a look, which mean she was serious. "You may be awesome, but you're stupid."
Have what? "A mom. A dad." She muttered, feeling her eyes well more. She felt herself begin to let the tears streak down her cheeks. She furvently wiped them away. No crying. "I know that, but you...you gotta tone it down sometimes. I feel suffocated." She enjoyed being close to him. He brushed hair out of her face and she smiled, feeling a little pink tint her tanned cheeks. Then he went and gave her a noogie. Angel tackled him, and grinned. "I win." She said, straddling his torso. She'd beat him up more after. If he could get her off. But she sat strong.
"Call you every five minutes work?" She asked sarcastically. She figured Chess would probably actually think that was a good plan, and she'd feel stupid for suggesting it. Angel envied Chess. He had a family. A sibling. Something she always wanted. She didn't tell him about her beginning search for her parents, which hadn't been going well during the summer. She wanted so badly to find them. Or at least see what they looked like. "A year? Fine. I'll wait." She didn't want to wait. But something in Chess' voice made her keep her mouth shut. She went back to thinking about his present for her. Due time? "I hate math." She whined, frowning. She still straddled him when he said something about clouds. "I'm comfortable where I am." She said with a grin. "You're holding me captive? I'll hang out with Faye later. And I don't think she likes Cassie, so that's a bad idea." The brunette said pointedly.
