it was close to curfew, this cassie was well aware of. she should have been on her way back to her dorm room to get some sleep but instead she was sitting in a stairwell looking up at the ceiling and drawing the beautiful ceiling. cassie had been at j cricket for four years and she was still amazed at how beautiful the school was. it looked so much like one of those castles in the movies. she was so glad that she had finally listened to her mom and came out to j cricket. it was probably one of the best decisions that she had made in her life. even though sometimes she felt as though she didn't really belong at the school she was still glad that she had decided to come here. checking her phone she saw that it was about thirty minutes to curfew. her drawing was almost done so she figured that she could finish it off in the next thirty minutes. digging around in her backpack for her colored pencils she pulled them out and started adding some color. cassie loved the way the ceiling looked. it was high up and looked like one of those old church ceilings. she often liked sitting under the ceiling and just looking up at it because it reminded her of the pictures that her dad used to draw.
thinking about her dad's drawings almost brought tears to cassie's eyes but it had been years since her father's death. she was used to the way her emotions came flooding back when she thought about him. rubbing her eyes to wipe away any tears that had decided to break away from her eyes she brushed her hair out of her face and finished her drawing. she knew that it was late and she knew that most people would probably in away in their dorm rooms already but at the same time she was hoping that she wasn't the only one who had decided to roam the halls before curfew. cassie didn't like being alone much, though sometimes that was the way things had to be. for once though cassie really didn't feel like being alone. there was something about the night that made her want to be in the company of someone else. wiggling her toes in her slippers cassie set down her pencils and laid back against the stairs for a bit. she wasn't normally the kind of person to stay out after curfew and break rules but tonight was just one of those nights when she felt like being a little rebelious. so instead of rushing to finish her drawing she figured she would chill out for a little bit and see if anybody came her way. "Eloise, Eloise, Eloise," the man began. He hovered over her like he was intimidating. Ha! As if! Eloise sat with her arms cross, inspecting her nails. He was nothing to her, and this lecture? Why it was just a silly means of discipline with very little respect radiating from either party. The man giving the lecture had no respect for the one being lectured and vice versa. In fact, Eloise wasn't even paying attention. She didn't know what crime she had commited this time, but she had a feeling that it was just this man bending the rules. While Eloise could be a naughty child and everyone knew she was up to no good more often than not, she rarely did anything that was proof that she was bad and had broken the rules. Not to mention that teachers loved Eloise because she was actually a very good student! She participated in class, and she aced most of her tests. The only thing that they had a problem with was the fact that she very rarely did her homework, and on occasion would doodle on the desks. Classes hadn't even begun though, so why was Eloise getting lectured in the detention hall? It made very little sense to her, so any wise person would tell her to pay attention to the lecture she was receiving. However, anybody familiar with the mind of a teenager would know that that was like asking a fly not to avoid the fly swatter at the last minute.
Having no real sense of judgement regarding the man's phrases, she cut in whenever she felt he was done. "Can I go now? I don't see what I did wrong," she looked at him, her blue eyes working their innocent charm. The disciplinarian was taken by surprise. He was only taking a breath to continue, but he saw no reason to keep her any longer. His last words of advice was regarding sneaking into peoples' dorms. Now Ellie remembered her big fault! Her friend had given her permission to borrow her calculator (Ellie had some summer work to catch up on for her advanced class), and her friend's roommate had walked in, accusing Eloise of theft. It was quite the mess, ending just how this unofficial detention was ending: with a roll of Eloise's bright eyes and her quickly making her escape. She hated, absolutely hated when things like this happened! When people didn't think about the whole story, but automatically thought that the constant trouble-making, admirable-conduct-offender was at it again. It was so narrowminded of them! Eloise couldn't stand when people were narrowminded (unfortunately, she was quite narrowminded herself).
Surely her friend would patch things up. Ellie made sure to surround herself with good, true, loyal friends. She didn't have many friends, but she made sure that she chose good ones when she made them. Her friend was probably working it all out right now. Naturally, Eloise was working out a plan in her own mind as well; a little revenge perhaps? It was Eloise's favourite passtime. As she thought about all of the ways that could bring her pleasure, she began trotting down the stairs, accidentally kicking somebody's color pencil collection down a few feet. Having had enough sour thoughts for one day (shocking how she could develop a limit, really) she began collecting the professional style pieces of wood. That's really all they were, wood and some colorful piece of something inside. Eloise didn't understand why some people would pay big money for "good pencils". Pencils were pencils. That's what some people said about Eloise and her musical equipment... So Ellie pushed the thoughts out of her mind and instead extended the pencils to the drawing girls. "Sorry about that." Woah, that was a sight! Ellie apologized? Well, she could apologize for little things - she wasn't a total bitch.
Eloise found that she recognized the girl, "Hey, you're Cassie, right? The girl with the killer cupcakes?" Ellie thought back to the slumber party. Those were some pretty darn good cupcakes!

cassie had been in another world dreaming about what it would be like when she had finally gotten her restaurant when she heard a few of her pencils rolling down the stairs. she was about to go pick them up when she realized that a blonde girl was already ahead of her and was picking them up for her. cassie recognized the girl as eloise, she had seen the blonde girl at the slumber party that was held just a couple days ago. at the slumber party it seemed that some of the girls didn't like the girl but cassie had found no reason to dislike her, at least not yet. putting her sketchbook aside she bent down and picked up the rest of her pencils. "oh don't worry about it. i probably shouldn't be sitting in the middle of the staircase. to be honest cassie probably looked silly sitting on the staircase in her pjs and slippers with her schoolbooks and stuff strewn out on the floor. not that it mattered much to her. brushing her dark hair out her face she looked up at the girl and smiled. "haha, yeah that's me alright. oh i don't know about killer cupcakes. it really doesn't take a brain surgeon to make decent tasting cupcakes." cassie had always been told that she was a pretty good cook. to her though nothing was ever perfect enough for her so of course she thought that there could have been something else that she could have done to those cupcakes.
grabbing her pencils up she slipped them back into the box before shoving the box back into her bag. "you're eloise yeah? cassie had heard all sorts of rumors about eloise around the school. she wasn't the kind to listen to rumors and judge people based on that. cassie was one of those people that tried to see the best in people. putting the finishing touches on her sketch, she closed up her book and held it on her lap. so what are you doing walking around this late at night? cassie was curious, she knew that eloise was one of those girls that caused some trouble around the school but she was sure that getting into trouble wasn't the only reason why ellie was out past curfew. So this girl officially didn't have a problem with Eloise yet, at least that's how it appeared. So in all fairness, Eloise had no reason to dislike the girl. At least not yet. Eloise usually determined within the first few minutes of the conversation whether it was right to be civil towards somebody or not. She was the kind of girl to fight fire with fire. She didn't care about the 'bigger fire' concept because when it came to that sort of 'fire', maybe she was a little bit of a pyromaniac. Luckily, she didn't feel the need to do that today because there was no predetermined disliking from the girl before her which was one of the first times Ellie had ran into that situation. Most times, people heard a few stories and were weary of the girl, but that wasn't the case today. If she was still slightly irritable like she had been earlier, she may not have been so nice. However, as previously mentioned, she was all out of sour remarks. Not to mention, she was quite worn out from not listening to a lecture. Who knew it could be so exhausting to ignore somebody!
When the girl said that it was more her fault that Ellie had managed to kick the pencils because Cassie was sitting in the middle of the stairs, the blonde shook her head slightly. "You have every right to sit in the middle of the staircase if you want," she grinned. If it was normal hours in the day, Eloise would agree that the girl shouldn't have been sitting in the middle, but it was later in the evening, near curfew, so there was no reason not to. It wasn't like somebody was going to be running down the stairs and trip over the girl at this hour. In fact, it was quite the opposite that was more likely- with the case of Eloise being a slight exception. She would've stated this further developed fact, if it weren't for Cassie making a remark about the cupcakes not being as great as Eloise was saying. Ellie liked to be right and have the last word on a matter that she didn't disagree with. This was one such matter, but all of her fight was gone - so it seemed. "You're right, anybody can make a decent cupcake," she agreed with a shrug, "Except for yours weren't just 'decent', they were near perfection!" That was Eloise's argument for now. She knew better than to call anything perfect because people will always deny it. So she would say 'near perfection', so that the person - in this case, Cassie - would know just how good the cupcakes were, but they wouldn't... Well, Ellie didn't know the second half of that thought, she just felt like it worked into the scenario somehow.
"Yup," Ellie nodded, "That would be me." Eloise wondered what, if anything, this girl had heard about her. At the slumber party Eloise had gotten the sense that a few of the girls didn't like her (not that she cared much, it was routine for her) as if it were predetermined. Eloise determined, in that moment on the stairwell, that if Cassie had any predetermined thoughts, than she could've said thank you made minimal talk, and shooed Ellie on her way. However, she hadn't; granted, Eloise had started the conversation, but it wasn't very difficult to end a conversation either. No, on the contrary, Cassie furthered the conversation. Cassie had earned some graces in Eloise's mind, though it was too soon for the blonde to tell. Maybe Cassie would make a judgement with Eloise's answer. The blue eyed girl hoped not because if she had come this far without judgement, she wanted to keep going... and maybe even find a friend? Eloise drummed her fingers on the banister as she answered, "I was being lectured in the detention hall." Now she was getting slightly angry with the thought of why she was there in the first place, but she figured she might as well explain herself to somebody who might actually listen, "My friend lent me her key to let me into her dorm to borrow her calculator so I could finish some catch up work, and her roommate walked in accusing me of theft."
note: no worries (:
